LOUNGE KAFTAN by AKONG
A long-awaited elevation in dressing around the home
EVERY GREAT PRODUCT STARTS WITH AN IDEA
The idea for this Lounge Kaftan came to me following a series of thoughts, realisations and experiences that occurred over some months.
Let me start from the beginning.
I was on vacation with my hubby and kids in Trinidad & Tobago, where my Mom still lives. I loved the easy, breezy, brightly printed dresses my Mom would wear around the house. I became obsessed with this idea of being able to just throw one of these dresses on and be comfortable and relaxed while pottering around at home. I realised that nobody was making these anymore, at least not for modern women of my generation. The seed was planted.
Back in the UK and winter was starting to set in. It was about 7;30am on a Saturday morning and there was a loud knock at the door. It was our weekly supermarket shop delivery. I bolted out of bed, grabbed my dressing gown and hurriedly tied it together as I ran downstairs to open the door. Looking quite dishevelled and feeling rather exposed, I vowed to come up with a better solution for covering-up at short notice.
After some reflection, I realised that a kaftan was really the solution I was looking for. Something easy, breezy, comfortable and relaxed that I could just throw on in the morning, keep on all day at home if I wanted to, and be able to answer the door shame-free. However, the big problem was fabrication. Every kaftan I found on the market was too lightweight - made of light cotton, silk, or more often polyester. I wanted my kaftan to feel substantial - like having a proper hug, not a fleeting caress. Plus, in case you forgot, this was December and it was sodding cold. Silk was just not going to cut it for me.
I attended a textile trade show in London. Among the hundreds of exhibitors from across the globe, one stood out like a beacon. It was a French textile company that had the most exquisite and riotous fabrics, made with all manner of crazy yarns of every imaginable texture and creative prints. I WAS IN LOVE. As I was immersing myself in these fabric samples, I saw a vision for a range of beautiful Lounge Kaftans using these amazing, textured materials. I decided there and then to make it happen.
My sample roll arrived. Giddy with excitement, I set to work making my first Lounge Kaftan. Shortly thereafter, I took my first order.
I'll be honest. This was a first for me. I had no prior experience doing womenswear, but you know what, I think sometimes that's a good thing.
All I know is that I want to keep creating things that aren't being done right now and sharing them with you as I make them. Some will be right up your street, others won't, but that's ok. My only mission right now is to inspire and empower you with the things I create, in whatever form that takes.
